I'm a |
A Cost Accountant by profession, placed at India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) as Assistant Manager (Finance & Accounts) — yet driven by an unrelenting passion for web designing and app development. A Bengali soul with numbers in the head and code in the heart.
I am Milan Das, a qualified Cost Accountant (CMA) under the prestigious Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). My professional journey has placed me at ITDC — India Tourism Development Corporation, where I serve as Assistant Manager in the Finance & Accounts department.
But here's the twist — my heart beats in a different rhythm. While my workday revolves around balance sheets, cost audits, and financial compliance, my evenings belong to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and the thrill of building something from scratch on the screen.
I am that rare combination of a finance professional who can read a P&L statement and simultaneously debug a JavaScript function. I believe the discipline of cost accounting and the creativity of web development are not opposites — they complement each other beautifully.
Grew up in a Bengali household where education was not optional — it was the only path. Numbers always made sense to me, and commerce became the natural choice.
Enrolled in the CMA course under ICMAI. Multiple stages — Intermediate, and Final. Late nights, cost accounting problems, financial management case studies, and the discipline that shaped my analytical mind.
While preparing for CMA exams, I stumbled into the world of web development. HTML felt like poetry. CSS felt like art. JavaScript felt like magic. A parallel universe opened up — and I never looked back.
Became a certified Cost Accountant. The sleepless nights paid off. The ICMAI membership gave me a professional identity and opened doors to the government sector.
Placed at India Tourism Development Corporation under the Government of India. Managing finance, accounts, budgeting, and cost analysis — while still building websites and apps after office hours. Living two lives, loving both.
The ITDC placement is in a completely different code from my hobby — but that's exactly what makes the story interesting.

Tools & Technologies I Work With
বাঙালি হওয়া শুধু একটা পরিচয় নয় — এটা একটা অনুভূতি। To progress as a Bengali person in today's world, one must hold both tradition and modernity in equal embrace.
Bengalis have always led India in intellectual pursuits. From Netaji to Amartya Sen, from Tagore to Satyendra Nath Bose — our DNA carries the hunger for knowledge. As a Bengali professional, I believe education is not a degree, it's a weapon. We must never stop learning, whether it's Cost Accounting or JavaScript. That's how Bengalis progress — by out-learning everyone else.
Every Bengali has an artist hidden inside. We celebrate Durga Puja not just as a festival but as the world's greatest outdoor art exhibition. This creativity is our competitive advantage. In my case, it manifests as web designing. The same eye that appreciates a perfectly crafted idol pandal also appreciates a perfectly crafted user interface. Bengalis must leverage this creativity in every field they enter.
To progress as a Bengali, we must break the stereotype that we only excel in arts and literature. We need to dominate in technology, business, and governance — while keeping our cultural soul intact. A Bengali can crack the CMA exam and still write poetry. A Bengali can build an app and still debate over Rabindra Sangeet. That balance is our strength, not our weakness.
February 21st taught the world that language is worth dying for. But protecting Bengali doesn't mean rejecting English or technology. It means being fluent in both — writing official emails in perfect English and reading Tagore in original Bengali. Being bilingual (or multilingual) is actually a cognitive advantage. I'm building websites in English while my thoughts flow in Bengali — and that's powerful.
The world calls it "networking" — we Bengalis have always called it "adda." Those endless chai-time conversations about politics, philosophy, cinema, and life? That's intellectual networking at its finest. We just need to channel it. Turn the adda into collaborations. Turn the debate into action. Turn the discussion over biryani into a startup idea. The social intelligence of Bengalis is unmatched — we need to use it strategically.
The biggest barrier to Bengali progress is our love for comfort. "অল্প অল্প করে চলা" is beautiful poetry but terrible career advice. We must be willing to leave Bengal, face competition, learn new skills, and take risks. I cleared CMA — not by staying comfortable, but by pushing through exhaustion. I learned web development — not because it was easy, but because I refused to be one-dimensional. Progress demands discomfort.
যেখানেই যাও, যত উচ্চতায় ওঠো —
মনে রেখো, তুমি বাঙালি; তোমার রস, বুদ্ধি ও সৃষ্টিশীলতাই তোমার স্বাতন্ত্র্য।
Wherever you go, however high you rise — remember you are Bengali; your wit, intellect, and creativity set you apart.
"আমি সেই বাঙালি — যে পূজার সময় দিল্লিতে বসে আছে..." Posted in Delhi at ITDC, fifteen hundred kilometres from home. Outside my window, Delhi rushes past — indifferent, loud, untouched by শারদীয় দুর্গাপূজা.
Not because of weakness. Because of cellular memory.
"Bengali is an ecosystem of emotion. When you're happy, 'ভালো লাগছে' captures a specific rhythm. In Delhi, the language of your heart has no listener."
"No matter the skill of the cook, মায়ের হাতের খাবার বানানো যায় না. Food is not nutrition for Bengalis — it's nostalgia served on a plate."
"A Bengali adda is a philosophical inquiry disguised as a conversation. In Delhi, conversations are efficient. In Bengal, conversations are alive."
"Bengal has a specific air — the শারদীয় বাতাস — that carries a smell of kash flowers and incense. Delhi's air is dry; it doesn't hold memories."
প্রিয় বাংলা,
"তোমাকে চিঠি লেখার কোনো মানে নেই। চিঠি তো সে লেখে যে দূরে আছে। আর আমি — আমি কি সত্যিই তোমার থেকে দূরে?"
I achieved my dream position at ITDC. I came to Delhi with ambition. But no one tells you the cost. The cost is every Puja you'll miss. Every monsoon evening you'll spend looking out of a window that doesn't open to a mango tree.
A selection of websites and apps I've designed and developed in my spare time.
A specialized financial tracking system for business advances with automated reminders.
Corporate petty cash management with partial settlement and audit logic.
High-precision utility for managing bank accounts and error-free RTGS details.
Under-the-hood financial automation and auditing systems currently in process.
The world rewards specialists, but remembers the polymaths. Da Vinci was a painter and an engineer. Tagore was a poet and a painter. Being a CMA who codes is not confusion — it's a superpower. The intersection of two unrelated fields is where innovation happens.
Everyone gets 24 hours. How you use the hours after 6 PM defines your trajectory. I chose to code after office instead of scrolling social media. Small daily investments compound into massive results over years.
A tree without roots falls in the first storm. My Bengali roots — the love for learning, the cultural richness, the intellectual curiosity — are what keep me grounded while I reach for professional heights. Never cut your roots to grow faster.
Share your journey. Let people see your struggles, not just your successes. This website itself is an act of building in public — showing the world that a finance guy from Bengal can also be a developer. Your story might inspire someone who's silently living the same duality.
